Formal, Non-formal, and Informal Education

Formal education is what we Americans would call ‘traditional education’, where we would attend K through 12^th grade and then onto college. That type of education is long-term and institution-based.  Formal education will be very structured and academic and will exclude itself from exterior environments.

Non-formal education will typically be short in duration and tends to be more practical. This type of education will be non-credential-based, flexible, and environment-based. Examples of non-formal education are job training, community demonstrations, and CPR training.

Informal education can be anything we learn in everyday life i.e., playing a game, gardening, or doing chores around the house.
